Is Die Casting Considered Green and Sustainable?

The global demand for environmentally conservative manufacturing and production practices is increasing day by day. That’s why it’s more important now than ever to make sure your products are high-quality and sustainable for the environment.

Implementing sustainable development keeps your company competitive, respectable and desirable. Luckily, when it comes to the question of “is die casting good for the environment?” the answer is yes.

Yes, Die Casting Is Green and Sustainable

Die casting embodies the three R’s of environmental sustainability: reduce, reuse and recycle. You’ve probably heard these terms before, but in case you don’t know how they apply to die casting, we’ve gone ahead and outlined the reasons below. Keep reading to learn more about why die casting is a great, green option.

1. Reduce

Die casting uses a unique, energy-saving metal casting method. Some casting processes require a sand mold suitable for one-time use only. The non-reusable sand mold itself wastes up to seven percent of the necessary energy. Die casting, on the other hand, uses molds up to 100,000 times before replacement. That’s a total savings of 700,000 percent. The die casting process reduces the amount of energy consumed, decreases its carbon footprint and secures the process as green and sustainable.

2. Reuse

Reusability is a hot topic for conversation when it comes to environmental conservation. In this regard, it’s clear that die casting is good for the environment because of its ability to be reused and repurposed. As the die reached the end of its lifespan, it’s never actually thrown away or wasted. Alternatively, the dies are shipped to other mills that repurpose them.

From there, the dies go on to hold a wide range of larger and unique products. They can also be recast — a highly efficient feature — into an entirely new die. This sustainable element of die casting highlights its minimal processing needs and use of new materials as time goes on.

3. Recycle

We all know what recycling is. Surprisingly enough, recyclability in the scope of die casting is quite impressive. In fact, almost all utilized materials are easily recycled — again, ensuring us all that dies casting is substantially sustainable.

Most die casting uses aluminum, a metal that’s easy to recycle, energy-efficient and cost-effective all at the same time. It’s one of those rare win-win-win situations. You, the planet and your energy bill all smile at just how green die casting really is.

Since die casting is so green and sustainable, it’s a good thing that as many as 95 percent of die castings made from aluminum are crafted entirely from recycled materials. The recyclability of die casting helps keep costs down while reducing carbon footprints and preventing an excess of materials from piling up on our earth. This kind of casting also helps diminish the frequency of metal mining.
